Survanta 25 Mg Injection 4 ml is a life-saving medication specifically formulated for premature infants who are at risk of or suffering from Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS). RDS is a condition where the lungs of premature babies are not fully developed, leading to a deficiency in surfactant, a substance that helps keep the air sacs in the lungs open.
The active ingredient in Survanta is beractant, a natural bovine (cow) lung extract containing phospholipids, neutral lipids, fatty acids, and surfactant-associated proteins. This composition closely mimics natural human surfactant, enabling it to effectively reduce surface tension in the lungs, improving oxygen exchange and lung function.
Administered directly into the infant’s trachea via an endotracheal tube, Survanta works rapidly to coat the inner lining of the lungs. This helps to prevent the air sacs from collapsing after each breath, making it easier for the baby to breathe and reducing the effort required for respiration. By improving lung function, Survanta significantly increases the chances of survival and reduces the risk of long-term complications associated with RDS.
Survanta is indicated for the prevention and treatment (‘rescue’) of RDS in premature infants.
