Description
Combovir Nirmatrelvir and Ritonavir Tablets is an antiviral medication used for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 infection in adults who are at high risk of progressing to severe illness, hospitalization, or complications. This combination therapy helps control the multiplication of the SARS-CoV-2 virus in the body when taken early after symptoms begin.
The tablets contain Nirmatrelvir, a SARS-CoV-2 protease inhibitor that blocks a key enzyme (main protease or Mpro) required for viral replication. By inhibiting this enzyme, Nirmatrelvir prevents the virus from multiplying in the body. Ritonavir acts as a pharmacokinetic enhancer that slows the breakdown of Nirmatrelvir in the liver, allowing it to remain active in the body for a longer period and improving its antiviral effectiveness.
Combovir is typically prescribed for patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 and are experiencing early symptoms such as fever, cough, fatigue, sore throat, body aches, or shortness of breath. The treatment is most effective when started within the first 5 days of symptom onset. It helps reduce the risk of severe disease progression and supports faster recovery.
The medication is taken orally as directed by a healthcare professional and should not be used without proper medical supervision. Patients should inform their doctor about any existing medical conditions, ongoing medications, or allergies, as Ritonavir can interact with several drugs.
